NABCEP Releases the Small Wind Installer Certification Application Ahead of the September 2010 Exam
- May 19, 2010

The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) is pleased to announce that effective immediately it is accepting applications to sit for the first administration of the Small Wind Installer Certification exam. This is NABCEP’s first certification for installers of a non-solar technology. It will target practitioners who specify, install and maintain wind energy systems and equipment. In the scope of this new credential, a small wind energy system is defined as being a grid connected or off-grid system with or without batteries rated at 100 kW or less....(more)

TVA enters wind-energy contracts - Jan. 14, 2010

The Tennessee Valley Authority will buy another 350 megawatts of wind power from the Midwest under contracts announced today.

TVA said it has entered two contracts with Invenergy Wind affiliates to provide a total of up to 350 megawatts from wind projects at the White Oak Energy Center in McLean County, Ill., and the Bishop Hill Energy Center in Henry County, Ill., both beginning in January 2012.

A contract with CPV Renewable Energy Co. will provide up to 165 megawatts of wind energy from the Cimarron project in Gray County, Kan., beginning as early as January 2012.

Another contract with Iberdrola Renewables Inc. will deliver up to 300 megawatts from the Streator Cayuga Ridge project in Illinois, starting in mid-2010.

Construction is scheduled or under way on all of these projects. Power delivery is subject to environmental requirements and firm transmission paths being secured.

“Wind power is a clean and limitless source of energy that directly enhances TVA’s mission of environmental stewardship,” TVA Executive Vice President Van Wardlaw said in a prepared statement. “When we look at all the options for renewable sources, it makes sense for TVA to invest in wind energy.”

The contracts are in addition to wind energy contracts with Invenergy Wind and CPV announced in October. This is the first contract between TVA and Iberdrola Renewables.

TVA said it is moving closer to its goal of having more than half of its power generation from non-carbon emitting sources with four new contracts for the purchase of up to 815 megawatts of renewable wind energy.

Study: Wind Farms have no effect on property value
- Dec. 2, 2009
Wind farms have no measurable effect on nearby property values, according to a government report published Wednesday.
In the latest study, researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory spent three years examining nearly 7,500 sales of homes in 10 communities near two dozen wind energy plants in nine states.
The researchers found no evidence home prices were affected by the view or the distance between the home and the wind farm...(more)

Future of Wind Power
- Oct. 24, 2009
As a guest on C-SPAN's Washington Journal, American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) CEO Denise Bode talked about the future of the wind power industry with the recession putting projects on hold, but growth still beating the previous year's. She responded to telephone calls and electronic communications. The AWEA reported that the U.S. has enough wind power to fuel the equivalent of nearly 9 million homes, up almost 23% from the start of the year, but the industry will fall short of earlier growth projections for the year largely because of last year's financial meltdown... TVA Contracts To Buy Renewable Wind Power
- October 22, 2009
TVA has entered contracts to purchase up to 450 megawatts of renewable wind energy - enough to serve about 140,000 average-size homes in the Tennessee Valley - from companies in North and South Dakota.
Under contracts announced on Thursday, CPV Renewable Energy Company will supply up to 200 megawatts from 87 turbines at its Ashley wind farm in McIntosh County, N.D., and Invenergy Wind LLC will supply up to 250 megawatts of power from 167 wind turbines at its Hurricane Lake Energy Center in Roberts County, S.D.
The contracts are the result of a request for proposals that TVA issued in December 2008... (more)

Renewable Electric Generation with Small Wind Systems

September 26-30, 2011

The  first  day of the REW workshop is dedicated to the "Basics  of  Electricity"; covering sources, types, and circuits. The next three days cover the technical aspects of small wind including  system types, components, applications, and best practices for installation, maintenance , and troubleshooting. A hands-on day taking down and re- erecting a 2.4 kW Skystream 3.7 turbine  system pulls together the classroom knowledge  and rounds out the workshop.

This training counts toward the educational requirement (other requirements needed) on the journey to becoming a NABCEP Certified Small Wind  installer.
