Ijams Nature Center gets 20m Anemometer
Tennessee Wind Working Group Installs
Second Anemometer at Ijams Nature Center

Ijams Nature Center is an 160-acre park that provides the general public with a nature preserve located in the the city of Knoxville.  Ijams Nature Center practices, and demonstrates, environmental responsibility ranging from conservation and efficiency to renewable energy displays. Home of a 15 kW TVA solar photovoltaics display, the Tennessee Wind Working Group was able to add to the renewable energy demonstration by erecting a 20m anemometer tower, equiped with a NRG Windexplorer Data Logger.  This data logger will allow Ijams Nature Center staff to integrate wind and solar into their highly renowned environmental education program.  Through Ijams Nature Center's program, hundreds of school age children and teachers will learn about renewable energy options in the state of Tennessee, as well as ways to conserve energy and use it more efficiently.  To learn more, or to visit Ijams Nature Center, please visit their website, www.ijams.org

Tennessee Wind Working Group grows experience, partnerships.

The Tennessee Wind Working Group was able to successfully partner with Ijams Nature Center, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, and the Climate Action Network to install the 20m anemometer tower at Ijams.  A valuable lesson was learned during the installation of the anemometer anchors.  In past experiences the Tennessee Wind Working Group had been able to utilize screw achors, which turn into the soil to anchor the guy wires for the anemometers.  Ijams Nature Center is built atop an old, abandoned quarry.  As volunteers worked to turn the anchors in the soil, they soon became painfully aware that screw anchors would not turn in rock.  The Tennessee Valley Authority was very generous in sharing star anchors, or anchors that are jack hammered into the ground, in order to allow the installation to move quickly.  The Tennessee Wind Working group wishes to thank the volunteers for their time, the Tennessee Valley Authority for its resources, and Ijams Nature Center for its patience, and willingness to work with the Tennessee Wind Working Group.
Ijams Programs
Living Clean & Green! is a series of programs and workshops designed to inform the public and improve the local environment. Programs vary in length and can be presented to your organization, club or gathering. Programs marked with the leaf are available for presentation to middle or high school classes as well!

Currently there are 15 program topics. Each program outlines environmental issues facing our community; how we impact these issues and what we can do to lighten the load we place on the environment. Informational materials and give-away items like free trees are also available. Living Clean & Green! is presented by Ijams Nature Center, Alcoa Foundation and Knox County.

Please see a list of the program topics and a short description of each at this link. For more information or to schedule a program for your group, call Kara at 577-4717, ext. 15.
